Quick answer: AliExpress vs Amazon is not a like-for-like choice: AliExpress is a supplier, Amazon is mainly a sales channel. For a Shopify store, AliExpress is the cheaper, policy-safe source. Selling AliExpress products on Amazon works only if you stay seller of record and meet Amazon's delivery targets — in practice that means bulk stock in FBA, not order-by-order dropshipping.

Last updated: 5 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Separate the two questions. "Where do I buy?" (AliExpress or Amazon) and "Where do I sell?" (your own store or Amazon) have different answers, and most bad decisions come from mixing them.

  • Buying from Amazon to fulfil Shopify orders rarely pays. Retail prices leave thin margins, and Amazon-branded boxes tell your customer where to reorder.

  • Selling on Amazon with AliExpress fulfilment is a policy risk. Amazon's drop shipping policy requires you to be the seller of record and to remove third-party seller details from every package.

  • Delivery speed is the hard limit. Amazon measures late shipments and tracking on every seller-fulfilled order; a 7–15 day AliExpress line struggles against Prime expectations.

  • The workable hybrid: test products on your own store with AliExpress, then move winners to bulk stock in FBA via Alibaba.com — and recover part of every sourcing order on the way.

Is AliExpress or Amazon better for dropshipping?

For sourcing, AliExpress is better for almost every dropshipper. It sells at or near factory price, supports dropshipping by design, and plugs into order tools such as DSers that forward orders automatically. Amazon is a retail marketplace: buying there means paying a retailer's margin on top of the factory price, so the same item usually costs noticeably more before you add your own markup.

For selling, Amazon has the bigger audience. Shoppers arrive already intending to buy, so you spend less on ads to get a first sale. The trade-off is control: Amazon sets the fees, the delivery standards and the rules on how orders may be fulfilled, and it can suspend a listing or an account that breaks them. Your own Shopify store costs more to fill with traffic, but the customer, the brand and the data stay yours.

So the useful framing is a 2×2: where you source and where you sell. Only two of the four combinations are realistic for most sellers, as the table below shows.

AliExpress vs Amazon: the four dropshipping combinations

Source → Sales channel

Margin potential

Policy risk

Delivery fit

Verdict

AliExpress → your Shopify store

High (factory-level cost, you set price)

Low — AliExpress supports dropshipping

OK if you pick fast lines and state delivery times honestly

Default for testing products

Amazon → your Shopify store

Low (paying retail price)

Medium — Amazon branding on the parcel, no reseller programme

Fast

Only for urgent one-off orders

AliExpress → Amazon (seller-fulfilled)

Medium on paper, after referral fees

High — seller-of-record and packaging rules

Poor — long transit hurts late-shipment and delivery metrics

Risky; not recommended at volume

Alibaba.com / AliExpress bulk → Amazon FBA

Medium to high at volume

Low — you own and ship the stock

Excellent (Prime eligible)

The scalable Amazon route

Notice that the scalable Amazon route is not dropshipping at all. It is inventory selling: you buy stock in bulk, ship it to Amazon's warehouses, and let Amazon fulfil. That is why most "AliExpress to Amazon" success stories are really private-label stories with a bulk supplier behind them.

Can you dropship from AliExpress to Amazon?

You can, but only inside Amazon's drop shipping policy. Amazon's drop shipping policy sets three core conditions:

  1. You are the seller of record on every order — you handle returns, customer service and any claims yourself.

  2. Your name is the only seller identity on packing slips, invoices and the outside of the package. Anything that names the AliExpress store must be removed before shipment.

  3. No retail-to-customer forwarding. Buying the item from another online retailer and having that retailer ship straight to your Amazon customer is explicitly not allowed.

Point 2 is where order-by-order AliExpress fulfilment usually fails. You cannot inspect the parcel, and a single seller who drops in their own invoice or flyer puts your account at risk. Some sellers negotiate plain packaging and custom packing slips with one trusted supplier, which helps, but it is a promise from the supplier, not a control you own.

The delivery-metric problem

Amazon tracks seller-fulfilled performance through targets such as a late shipment rate under 4%, valid tracking on more than 95% of orders and an order defect rate under 1% (as published in Amazon Seller Central's account health guidance). Standard AliExpress lines take one to several weeks, and our AliExpress delivery time guide shows how much that varies by country and seller. Even when you set long handling times honestly, slow listings lose visibility against Prime offers, and every "where is my order?" message pushes your defect rate up.

What does one order actually earn on each route?

Here is a worked example for a $25 retail product that costs $6 on AliExpress plus $3 shipping. Fees are typical published rates; your category and plan will differ, so treat the numbers as a template, not a promise.

Two lessons come out of this table. First, buying from Amazon to fulfil your own store wipes out the margin before you have paid for a single click. Second, the Amazon seller-fulfilled column looks best on paper only because the biggest cost — the chance of losing the account — does not appear as a line item. For a deeper split of where AliExpress fees hide, see our AliExpress dropshipping fees breakdown.

The product line is also the one cost you can still lower after the sale. Seller coupons, quantity tiers and AliExpress cashback of up to 11% all apply to the same sourcing order, so on the $9 cost above, a few percent recovered goes straight to profit. Amazon's retail price has no equivalent layer for resellers.

Which route fits your business?

  • You are testing products with under $1,000 in monthly sales: source on AliExpress, sell on your own store. Pick sellers with fast lines — our AliExpress shipping methods comparison shows which options are worth paying for.

  • You have a proven product and want Amazon's traffic: order samples, then buy bulk stock on Alibaba.com and send it to FBA. Alibaba.com orders can earn cashback of up to 9%, and our AliExpress vs Alibaba vs 1688 vs Taobao comparison explains when to move up a tier.

  • You need an item in a hurry for a single customer: buying from Amazon is acceptable as a stop-gap, but do not build a catalogue on it.

  • You are weighing other cheap sources: the same seller-of-record logic applies to Temu vs AliExpress for dropshipping, where branded packaging is the deciding factor.

Whichever route you choose, every AliExpress or Alibaba.com order you place is a sourcing cost you can partly recover. Frequently asked questions

Is AliExpress cheaper than Amazon?

Usually yes for the same generic product, because AliExpress sellers price close to factory cost while Amazon listings include a retailer's margin and fast-delivery costs. The gap shrinks once you add AliExpress shipping and longer delivery times, so compare the delivered price, not the list price.

Is dropshipping from AliExpress to Amazon allowed?

Only under Amazon's drop shipping policy: you must be the seller of record, your business must be the only seller named on packing slips and packaging, and you handle returns. Buying from another online retailer and having it ship directly to your Amazon customer is not allowed. Because you cannot inspect AliExpress parcels, many sellers treat this route as too risky at volume.

Can I dropship from Amazon to my Shopify store?

You can place an Amazon order with your customer's address, but Amazon has no reseller programme, the parcel arrives in Amazon packaging, and retail prices leave little margin. It works as an occasional backup, not as a business model.

What is the best way to sell AliExpress-type products on Amazon?

Buy stock in bulk — usually from Alibaba.com or a trusted AliExpress seller after sampling — and ship it to Amazon FBA. You own the inventory, Amazon handles Prime delivery, and you avoid the packaging and delivery problems of order-by-order dropshipping.

Can I get cashback on Amazon or AliExpress orders?

Refundy covers AliExpress (up to 11%), Alibaba.com (up to 9%), 1688 and Taobao, not Amazon. Cashback is tracked when you click the extension before payment, and it is paid to PayPal from $5, released around 90 days after approval.
